My State PowerPoint Project

I. The Learners, Environment, & the Instructional Goal
The Learners
                         The learners in this lesson are high school students (9-12). Overall attitude towards learning is positive. Learners work well in groups. 

The Environment
            Students will be in the computer lab that has twenty-four computers readily accessible. They will be put into groups of 3-4 where they will conduct research together.

Target Goal
            Using provided research materials and the internet; the student will be completing a state project, with minimal assistance from the teacher. Each student will pick a state about their projects. Students will complete an informational sheet about their state. From this informational sheet, students will create a PowerPoint presentation to present to the class about their state.

II. Task Analysis & Instructional Objectives

First Level Task Analysis
            1) Brainstorm to pick a state for the project 
            2) Gather information about the state, and prepare information sheet
            3) Create a PowerPoint presentation about the state
In-Depth Task Analysis         

     Entry Level Skills: Knows how to create slides, how to insert pictures on the PowerPoint, how to change template, and design, knows basic research methods
            1) Brainstorm to pick a state for project 
               -1.1: Have students get into groups (3-4 in size)
               -1.2: Instruct students to come up with a slogan inviting people to visit, and picture(s), list of three outstanding features of their state, provide three facts about each outstanding feature they want to promote in their state.
            2) Research about state and prepare information sheet
               -2.1: Have students to collect information from the Internet, encyclopedia CD's, books, reference materials, welcome center brochures, or Email to the tourist division of the state.
               -2.2: Have students use the internet to research any other methods they choose
            3) Create a PowerPoint presentation about state
               -3.1: Have students use their information sheet to create a PowerPoint presentation about the state
               -3.2: Display students' PowerPoint presentations on the projector for the other students to see

  III. Performance Objectives & Assessment
    
Performance Objectives
            1) Within their groups, the student will discuss their ideas of picking up what state that they want to work, without assistance.
            2) Using provided research materials and the internet, the student will create an information sheet about their state, with minimal assistance.
            3) Using provided materials in their groups, the student will create a PowerPoint presentation about their state, with minimal assistance.

Assessment
          The group projects will be graded by the following rubric:


Slide Suggestions:
Slide 1
Title slide may include name of your state, a slogan inviting people to visit, and picture(s)
Slide 2
List the three outstanding features of your state.
Slides 3, 4 & 5
On each of the next three slides, give three facts about each outstanding feature you want to promote in your state.
Slide 6
Concluding statement

Requirements for your slide show:
1
There must be a transition between each slide

Clip art must be used on at least 2 slides.

You must use at least one graphic taken from the Internet
4
At least 3 slides must be animated

               Three points: includes more than 3 outstanding features and 9 facts; transitions have been used in every slide; clipart, graphics and animated pictures included 
               Two points: 
includes at least 2 outstanding features and 6 facts; most slides have transitions between each slides; clipart, graphics and animated pictures included
               One point: 
includes less than 2 outstanding features and 6 facts; less than 1 transition has been applied; few or no illustrations

IV. Instructional Strategies

Instructional Strategies

          Pre-Instructional Activities:
                    1) The learner will be engaged from the onset by telling them - “We are beginning a project where you will become an expert on one state in our country, and learn a lot about many of the states.
                    2) The teacher will say “I have chosen New York as MY STATE,but you can pick one of the many others..”
          Content Presentation:
                    The content will be delivered in computer lab through worksheets, maps, and research materials.
          Learner Participation: 
                    The student will be engaging in brainstorming, conducting research, and creating a presentation.
          Evaluation:
                    The rubric mentioned above will be used to grade the student's projects.
